Mass Speculation Suggests Oracle May Kill OpenSolaris

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols is one of many people questioning where Oracle may land once the acquisition of Sun is complete. One concern that many people express is that there may be a good chance of OpenSolaris getting the axe for not fitting in with the overall corporate vision.

"People outside of IT seldom think of Oracle as a Linux company, but it is. Not only does Oracle encourage its customers to use its own house-brand clone of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), Oracle Unbreakable Linux, Oracle has long used Linux internally both on its servers and on some of its desktops. So, what does a Linux company like Oracle wants to do with its newly purchased Sun's open-source operating system, OpenSolaris? The answer appears to be: 'Nothing.' Sun, Oracle and third-party sources are telling me that OpenSolaris developers are afraid that they'll be either moved over to working on Linux or let go once the Sun/Oracle merger is completed."

PSOUG / Oracle Advanced Security Encrypts Oracle Applications Data
« on: June 29, 2009, 07:46:57 AM »
Oracle Applications Now Certified with Oracle Advanced Security’s Transparent Data Encryption Feature

Redwood Shores, CA – June 29, 2009

News Facts
Continuing to deliver comprehensive data protection to the Oracle® E-Business Suite, Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise, Oracle’s Siebel CRM and Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne application customers, Oracle today announced that Oracle Advanced Security, an option to Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition, transparently encrypts all application data stored in an Oracle Database tablespace.

Customers that use the Transparent Data Encryption feature of Oracle Advanced Security can now encrypt entire data sets used by Oracle Applications for data privacy protection and to help meet regulatory requirements.

By transparently encrypting application data using Oracle Advanced Security, customers can deploy quickly and implement greater data protection across their applications using efficient transparent encryption and decryption inside their Oracle Database.

Full Encryption for Sensitive Oracle Application Data
Oracle’s Transparent Data Encryption provides increased protection for application data stored in the database (tablespace), without requiring enterprises to know which fields contain sensitive or regulated data, helping reduce deployment time and effort.

It enables strong data privacy through the use of standards-based encryption algorithms such as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES), as well as built-in key management with support for industry leading Hardware Security Modules.

Since Oracle’s Transparent Data Encryption automatically performs all cryptographic operations inside the Oracle Database, no costly and time consuming changes to existing applications are required.

Customers can secure their application data with confidence, knowing the tablespace encryption and decryption operations are performed transparently and efficiently at the Oracle Database I/O layer.

Oracle Advanced Security also works with Oracle Advanced Compression enabling Oracle Database 11g customers to encrypt application data after compression -- providing both data protection and storage savings.

By encrypting data at rest in the database as well as when it leaves the database over the network or during backups, Oracle Advanced Security provides a cost-effective solution for data in transit and at rest encryption.

Part of Oracle's comprehensive portfolio of database security solutions, Oracle Advanced Security helps organizations comply with privacy and regulatory mandates such as Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as numerous breach notification laws.
Supporting Quotes

“Oracle Applications drive many of the business processes in the enterprise and their data must be protected. Being able to efficiently and transparently encrypt application data in the database tablespace makes Transparent Data Encryption very easy to deploy,” said Vipin Samar, vice president of Database Security, Oracle. “Using the Transparent Data Encryption feature of Oracle Advanced Security in conjunction with Oracle Database 11g, customers can now efficiently encrypt not just select fields or columns, but all the application data - enabling a greater level of data privacy protection.”

“New data privacy regulations are being introduced worldwide and existing regulations are being expanded to address increased threats to data,” said Gary Loveland, PricewaterhouseCoopers' Advisory principal and security practice leader in the US. “Over the years, we've seen requirements to expand protection around critical data such as medical data, personal identifiable information, and credit card information. There is no doubt that in 2010 even more data will need to be protected. Being able to encrypt all application data efficiently is a big benefit to organizations in terms of keeping up with business needs and staying ahead of regulatory requirements.”

PSOUG / U.S. government seeks more data on Oracle-Sun deal

U.S. government seeks more data on Oracle-Sun deal

U.S. antitrust regulators have asked for more information on Oracle Corp's plan to buy Sun Microsystems Inc and need a little more time to review the $7 billion deal, an attorney for Oracle said.

This means that Oracle has failed to get approval for the deal as quickly as some had hoped, as Friday had marked the expiration of an initial 30-day review period in which antitrust officials could have approved the deal quickly by letting the deadline pass without asking any questions.

The Department of Justice asked both companies for information related to the licensing of Sun's Java software language, said Daniel Wall, a partner with Latham & Watkins and an attorney for Oracle.

The request was related to a narrow, technical matter, according to Wall, who said he expected the DOJ to soon approve the deal and allow Oracle to complete the acquisition during its current fiscal quarter, which ends on August 31.

"We've had a very good dialogue with the Department of Justice and we were almost able to resolve everything before the Second Request deadline. All that's left is one narrow issue about the way rights to Java are licensed that is never going to get in the way of the deal," Wall said in an interview. "I fully expect that the investigation will end soon and not delay the closing of the deal this summer."

Oracle profit beats forecast, margin at record
By Jim Finkle

BOSTON, June 23 (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (ORCL.O) reported quarterly earnings above expectations as the No. 3 software maker's profit margin hit a record thanks to robust growth in its maintenance business, sending shares up 2.7 percent.

The company run by billionaire Larry Ellison also reported a smaller-than-expected drop in new software sales and said it grabbed market share from SAP in certain segments -- signs that Oracle may be weathering the downturn better than rivals.

 "We've been able to push through the economic situation rather well and I have to tell you that I still see the pipeline growing rather significantly," Oracle President Safra Catz said in a conference call.

Oracle's quarterly results and outlook beat expectations it set in March, when executives warned the recession and strong dollar would take a substantial bite out of profits. Since then, the economy has stabilized and the currency has weakened, setting Oracle up to beat those conservative estimates.

Microsoft kills Visual Studio's Oracle data connection
By Gavin Clarke

Swift reaction: 'Sucks', 'shortsighted'

Full Story:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/18/microsoft_kills_oracle_connector/

Coders have reacted with disappointment and frustration to Microsoft's decision to cease development of a connector to Oracle in its .NET Framework, a move that looks like another budget cut.

Microsoft has said it will no longer develop OracleClient,or System.Data.OracleClient, with the up-coming .NET Framework 4.0. It will still be included with the framework but will be "marked as deprecated."

The .NET Framework 4.0 is the basis of Visual Studio 2010 - both due later this year - and therefore the programming model for new and recent versions of Windows. Oracle is the industry's number-one database in terms market share.

"We strongly recommend customers to use our partners' ADO.NET Provider for Oracle instead of continuing to use Microsoft's OracleClient for new application development," ADO.NET OracleClient program manager Himanshu Vasishth blogged. He added Microsoft would continue to provide bug fixes for "critical" issues in OracleClient and development of new applications using OracleClient would be supported.

. . .

Furthermore, there's a suggestion that Microsoft is killing its development efforts as part of the overall corporate strategy of cutting costs to get through the recession. Microsoft has been re-configuring product teams and cut projects and business units that are considered small and non-core but that, naturally, have a financial cost associated with them.

PSOUG / Oracle Kills Virtual Iron
« on: June 20, 2009, 08:29:32 PM »
 Oracle is killing off the products of Virtual Iron, a month after purchasing the company. Reports say that all but 10 to 15 staff were let go. The Reg article speculates that Oracle bought VI for its technology and considers its customers and partners expendable. When the Sun purchase finalizes, Oracle will be in possession of three separate virtualization technologies all based on Xen.

Ina letter to Virtual Iron's sales partners, Oracle says it 'will suspend development of existing Virtual Iron products and will suspend delivery of orders to new customers.' One partner said, 'So basically, anyone that built their hosting infrastructure on VI... is now totally in the ****".

Simulation and optimization techniques can provide critical insight into risk-analysis and decision-making (such as cost estimating, scheduling, resource allocation, engineering design, tolerance allocation, cycle-time reduction, financial/portfolio analysis, sales forecasting, etc.) by modeling the behavior of a process, product or service. This session will demonstrate the benefits of spreadsheet simulation and optimization for business decision-making in a highly uncertain economic environment.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Monte Carlo Simulation 101: What is it and why is it important?
  • How to predict and mitigate the effects of uncertainty and risk.
  • Examples of simulation/optimization applied in business decision analysis.

Through a series of discussion and examples, you will learn practical techniques for how to:

  • Predict performance of current business processes to determine areas of significant improvement potential.
  • Enable rapid analysis in situations with either extensive data OR with no data.
  • Start simple, focus on what’s important. Understand which key factors have the highest impact on your results and where to focus your improvement efforts.

Develop and predict the performance of future-state business initiatives prior to committing to change.

PSOUG / Re: How to get Visitors online
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:10:44 AM »
Steve,

We record each unique IP adddress that visits us and store it in a table along with a time and date stamp.

On each page load we do a count of the addresses in the table to get that number.

Also on each page load any IP addresses that are more than 10 minutes old are flushed so they don't get counted. The number you see is the number of different visitors in the last ten minutes.

If you'd like the code for this function, I've pasted a similar function in below.

I go to http://www.psoug.org/library.html

near the bottom there is

  ###  visitors online

How do you get the number of Visitors online ?

Code: [Select]
This script displays number of users currently browsing your site.

The table structure:

CREATE TABLE useronline (
timestamp int(15) DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL,
ip varchar(40) NOT NULL,
file varchar(100) NOT NULL,
PRIMARY KEY (timestamp),
KEY ip (ip),
KEY file (file)
);

The actual Users Online script below should be included in the
footer (or on all pages). It will display the numbers of users
on your website at any one time.

<?php
$server
"xxx";
$db_user "xxx";
$db_pass "xxx";
$database "xxx";

$db mysql_connect($server$db_user,$db_pass);
mysql_select_db($database,$db);

$timeoutseconds 600//10 minutes

$timestamp time();
$timeout $timestamp-$timeoutseconds;

PSOUG / Oracle Beware - Google Tests Cloud-Based Database

Oracle Beware — Google Tests Cloud-Based Database

On Tuesday, the same day Google held a press event to launch its Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook, the company quietly announced in its research team blog a new online database called Fusion Tables.

Under the hood of Fusion Tables is data-spaces technology, which would 'allow Google to add to the conventional two-dimensional database tables a third coordinate with elements like product reviews, blog posts, Twitter messages and the like, as well as a fourth dimension of real-time updates,' according to Stephen E. Arnold, a technology and financial analyst.

'So now we have an n-cube, a four-dimensional space, and in that space we can now do new kinds of queries which create new kinds of products and new market opportunities,' said Arnold, whose research about this topic includes a study done for IDC last August. 'If you're IBM, Microsoft and Oracle, your worst nightmare is now visible.'"
